5 out of 5 stars A step in the right direction...   May 1, 2010

I researched the web meticulously before deciding at the last moment to finding an entry level electric given the funds at hand. It should be pointed out that if you can afford to spend more $, one can get more bike. Lithium batteries & aluminum framed bikes cost more $ and LAS (Lead Acid Sealed) & steel framed bikes cost less. Like most technologies, hopefully as time & research goes by, the options will be more plentiful and the prices will drop for the higher end product. That said, I looked hard @ [...], 2 of the more approachable websites for electric bikes. I just happened to give Amazon a try and was very pleased to find the bike and price I was looking for with FREE SHIPPING! There were no issues in shipping and getting the bike together was for the most part not too challenging. This from a person who doesn't have great mechanical skills. The only issue I had was getting the brakes fine tuned. I left that to my local bike shop who in less than a few minutes had the brakes set to where they needed to be. If a bike shop in your neighborhood can help you, I strongly urge you to enlist their help, even if it will cost you a few bucks. This will be $ well spent as this should be an investment that can pay dividends if maintained. I can't speak for anyone else, but for me, stopping when I need to is paramount...lol. The bike is of solid construction and has plenty of pep in both PAS (pedal assist) & TAG (twist & go) modes. Living in Phoenix, Az.,I was in desperate need of transpo w/out too much effort due to the temperatures here. The bike is not light and if the battery is removed, is manageable. People who can't lift too much weight should plan accordingly. Given city traffic, I appreciate that this is not a dainty piece of equipment. The eZip pedals amazingly with ease and am very pleased with my purchase. If you read the owner's manual and do what it says, you hopefully will be as happy with your bike as I am with mine. Pay particular attention to battery usage/maintenance and call the folks @ Currie technologies if there are questions. I can definitely see myself getting another bike, at least an upgrade to a lithium battery. This is a technology that needs pursuance, not only in cycling, but in autos as well. Gulf oil spill anyone? Let's get off the oil tit, fellow americans! OK, I'm off my soapbox, lol, see ya down the road...

5 out of 5 stars Excellent - exactly as expected   June 13, 2010

In judging the wisdom of a purchase, the measure should be whether or not it meets your expectations. This bike is exactly as advertised and the reviews I read also prepared me for aspects of the purchase that were worth knowing. This is not a feather light bike - I expected that. It was easily assembled because all the tricky wiring was alread done - I expected that. I get less than the 15-22 miles distance on a battery charge as stated in the ads because I push the envelope regarding the rider's weight (260 - going down to the 240 max), the terrain (we live in a valley - to go anywhere, we go up hill first), and the level of rider effort (I have a heart problem and am probably the laziest exerciser in the entire world) - I expected that. What I didn't expect was the overall quality of the bike (this is a NICE bike). I also didn't expect it to arrive the Friday before the Monday projected delivery date. Overall, I am very pleased and already have just under 200 miles on the bike. Next step is to order my wife one. She could always handle me being a better dancer, but having a "cooler" bike seems to be turning her green.

I bought this bike for commuting to my office about a mile away. I live in Houston so for half the year if you're pedaling, even on the flat, you are seriously sweating when you arrive, which is ok if you're not going to work, meetings, etc. This gets me there fast and as a bonus I get a 15 mph breeze to keep me cool. Perfect machine for commuting in town. In fact, it's so much fun to ride, I look for excuses to use it.
I've used the bike for about five trips now and it seems very solidly built and well constructed. As others have noted, it is heavy, esp. with the battery on board. One day I left the battery locked in the bike and forgot to switch off the battery switch at the back of the battery rack--YOU MUST DO THIS OR THE BATTERY WILL CONTINUE TO DRAIN WHILE YOU ARE AWAY, which they don't emphasize enough in the user's manual. I had to pedal home but I was surprised by how easy it was to pedal this bike (true, where I live is flat; uphill with the bike weight might be a different story). My only complaint was that when it arrived it had a broken spoke on one of the wheels--happened in shipping no doubt, since the wheel is nested next to the pedals. Fortunately I was able to switch out the wheel with one on my old mountain bike, then get it fixed and switch it back in. Other than that, no complaints.
Overall, as others have noted, this is an amazing deal for a well built, nicely designed bike--400 dollars plus free shipping on Amazon. When you consider the cost of alternatives (mopeds, vespas, and even just more expensive bikes) it's a no brainer for buzzing around town.

I have been looking for an electric bike for a while. I saw a guy driving down the street on one of these and just new I had to have one. There is bike shop near by sold these and I was able to test drive it. I instantly knew I had to get one. I found a forum [...] which had lots of information about these bikes. I ended up getting on from wal-mart there was a store that had them in stock about 20 miles away so I made the drive to get it. Not all stores carrey these instock but you can check the website and see if a store nearby has one. Target also sells these bikes as well. Of course you can get one on Amazon too which is probably the least expensive way to get one. I couldn't wait for the bike to ship so I drove to the nearest store to get mine.

These bikes are the best bang for your buck electric bike!

After extensive Web research, I purchased this bike. Although part of the reason was the relatively low cost, part was also to get a more effective work out. I am 61 yo, weighed 190lb and live half way up the Grand Mesa in CO. I have a heart condition and my doctor recommended moderate exercise (not strenuous) and I love bike riding, but everything from my house is either up hill and ride down or down hill and ride up-no flat places. I have had the bike for almost a month and ride almost every day. The hills are steep and going up first, the battery registers half charge after just over a mile. By 3 and half miles it registers empty. I can still coax another 3 miles out of it before it starts sputtering. I bought an extra battery and can get almost 9 miles up the hill. Coming down is exhillerating with an 80 lb bike (weight with 2 batteries) (max speed 48 mph!). The thing is, you have to pedal in assist mode or the motor won't go. The result is a good work out without being too strenuous. I passed some bikers going up hill on their road bikes (I was doing 10 mph) and appologized for cheating. I have also tried it on relatively flat ground and can get about 20 miles on one battery. I have moved (rewired) the switch to the front so I can easily turn it on for up hill and off for down. I rarely take the bike out of high gear. The average speed on the bike is 15 mph compared to my usual 10 mph on my road bike. I have never used the bike in only motor mode, but it is everything I had hoped for. I would recommed it to someone in my situation.
